SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1SUMMARY
The study examined the influence of western television programmes on the dress sense of the University of Port Harcourt students. A sample size of three hundred and forty was drawn from the population. 340 copies of questionnaire were distributed and all of these copies were retrieved. The result obtained from the questionnaire were collected and presented in tables.
The research work showed that the western television programmes aired on television affects the way students dress. Students say that there is a link between the way they dress and the television programmes they watch. Most students-girls, especially-say they often feel pressure to dress the way celebrities dress.
The study also revealed that many students prefer foreign-produced television programmes to locally-made programmes. In conclusion, there are noticeable changes in the dress sense of students as a result of the foreign television programmes they watch.

5.2CONCLUSION
Young people are highly influenced by images of stars and models shown on western television programmes. When students watch entertainment shows on television, they subconsciously absorb observations and then enact them, knowingly or unknowingly. Such absorption can be seen in the way they dress. Much of the western television programmes depict media icons.
Western media’s constant barrage of slender, scantly clad women and buff, muscular, tan and half-naked men reinforce the notion of the “ideal” way students should dress, which is exactly the type of imagery that has a negative effect on young people. Students give lots of power and credibility to many things they see on western television programmes.
The findings of this study yielded some significant result. The majority of responses indicated that the participants agreed that media marketing through western television programmes had an effect on their lives, especially the way they dress. Television has infiltrated almost every part of students’  life, whether it be the way they style their hair, the way the speak, expectations within a relationship and, of course, the way they dress. Now, television influences what students perceive as “fashionably cool” and wha is “in” and “out” of style.
Students should stop copying celebrities blindly. Celebrities are just one outlet for the media to push their agenda to the public. The system adopted by those who make these programmes entices young students. Each person emulates something. Everybody influences someone else, either negatively or positively. The media’s main concern is making money. Unfortunately, the main concern of producers is not influencing consumers for the greater good of society but rather selling products that the population will like and want to emulate.

5.3RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendations are put forward by the researcher.
Government should introduce media education in the curriculum of Universities. With an educated understanding of media images and messages, students can recognize television’s potential effects and make good choices. Also, this media literacy would help students to understand how and why the media portrays people the it does as well as how to differentiate between realistic images and fake, made-up images.
Government, should introduce various forms of restrictions on advertising that influence students negatively.
Media managers and practitioners must develop a Nigeria cultural inclination and consciousness that will allow for the production of programmes that reflect the Nigerian culture.

5.4SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDIES
This study provides some information regarding the influence of western television programmes on the dress sense of the University of Port Harcourt students. Additional questions pertaining to how television positively (and negatively) influences students should be researched inorder for a more accurate result to occur; thus, the following suggestions for further research and study are offered.
This study should be replicated by using a more diverse population to determine a more accurate opinion of the population.
A study should be conducted to determine whether or not western television programmes have more of a positive influence on students than a negative one.
Further study on the contents of western television programmes should be conducted.
