SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1Summary

Having explored the work, the result showed that the people living in Kalabari community depend on traditional communication media for information. The study further revealed that providing information and education were the role of traditional communication in rural development in Kalabari community. This aspect of result showed that traditional communication is positive instrument of information and education which translate to enlightenment of the rural community.
Above all, the result showed that there is a positive relationship between traditional communication and rural development of Kalabari community vis-à-vis political, social and economic development. By implication the traditional media have been empirically proven to be a positive instrument of achieving accelerated political and economic development through the mobilization of the people of Kalabari community.
From this study, we also found out that the mass media is very unpopular among the people of Kalabari community. It was also found out from the study that the drum in the hands of the town crier is more effective in passing messages in the rural areas.
The most interesting aspect of these communication channels is their simplicity and affordability. Illiteracy is never a barrier to the acceptance of message sent through Oramedia. No electricity or electric gadget is needed, and so poverty is in no way a barrier to receiving any messages packaged and sent out through these traditional modes of communication. Thus, it is economically advantageous.

5.2Conclusion
The main objective of this study was to find out the role of traditional communication in rural development Kalabari.
So many social, economic, political and development activities in Bayelsa State in particular and Nigeria in general had failed because the rural dwellers had been neglected in the planning and implementation of the programmes. The basic militating factor has been the chronic inability to penetrate, persuade and mobilize rural dwellers through effect channels to embrace the programmes.
This study has been prompted by the desire to find lasting solution of this problem. In any case, it is largely succeeded in establishing a social case for the employment of the oral-media for mobilizing the grassroots dwellers for political, social and developmental programmes. The suggest that “ruralized” communication should be adopted.
This study which centered on the role of traditional communication in rural development investigated among other things, the various informational means responded to messages been relayed to them. The findings were clearly represented in tables and analyzed. The four (4) research question which bordered on the position of mass media and oral-media as they concern rural information, were adequately answered by the findings of the study.

5.3Recommendations

Having discussed the role of traditional communication in rural development in Kalabari the researcher therefore recommend thus:
First and foremost, it should be noted that in as much as the need for traditional communication was concerned, we should bear in mind the ubiquitous presence and the deep cultural and historical origin of the traditional forms of communication.
It is important for us to note that there is need for vital contributions of these cultural heritages of African people in preservation of societies and their values.
In other to overcome the difficulties involved in the use of traditional systems of communication there should be need for the establishment of programmes of research and action concerning this forms of communication with the view to analyzing the philosophical and technical assumption underlying these forms of communication.
