CHAPTER
ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
of the study
Students attitude towards foreign
programmes on independent television has become a worrisome thing all over the
country.
Television “The name came from the
Greek words “Tele and Videre”. Television is a means of distributing culture
and entertainment. Television is very crucial in development of any nation.
According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s
Dictionary Programme is “something that people watch on television or listen to
on the radio”. A programme can be foreign or manufactured locally to educate,
inform, entertain people.
Foreign means something not from your
own country, i.e. not known to somebody, and therefore seem strange. So a
programme can be foreign but also transmitted by our local television station.
Before, the coming of private
television station, there were government owned station in nearly every state
in Nigeria. Then, television was the responsibility and instrument of
government to broadcast to the people. Only the NTA station owned by the
Federal Government and State Government owned station were in existence until
1992. There were no Independent Television as at that time.
But in 1993, the Federal Government
allowed private organization to be established and operate broadcasting
station. This was done through the Decree No. 38 of 1992 which was also used to
establish the industry regulator body, The National Broadcasting Commission
(NBC). The decree made it possible for what we now see today in the
broadcasting industry whereby we now have private station like AIT African
Independent Television, Silverbird Television, Galaxy Television etc.
These private stations have many
different programmes for the audience. This makes the audience have access to
different programmes of their choice. The audiences watch more of foreign
programmes offered by private station. Over the year study has shown that
majority of the public tunes to private station more. These states have the
obligation to truthfully and accurately inform the audience and attract a large
number of people through the various events broadcast on the private station.
Private stations have both sides the
advantage and the disadvantage of which the negative side of this station
cannot be neglected but requires more focus. Independent television can make an
individual and the power to control the exposure provided by the station lies
on how one know and understand the reason for these programmes.
The negative sides of these foreign
programmes on independent television have created bad thinking amongst all.
Thus, the audience are made to watch more of foreign programmes thereby
shutting them off local events and progammes. Some people may see these as a
good thing while other will see it as a bad thing. This is why this research is
been carried out. This research evaluates the attitudes of students towards
foreign programmes on Independent Television station in Port Harcourt using
uniport students.
1.2 Statement
of the problem
Nigeria is endowed with rich culture
and traditions. It people are known to be decent, peaceful and caring. Since
the Independent Television station became a major part of our global culture,
it negative side have changed the society and lives of individuals. Some
private station plays on the insecurity of people. Most of these programmes
shown on these stations are not global for our youths. Most students tend to do
what they watch on these station. Students find it more interesting watching
the programmes on Independent Television instead of watching the government
owned which has a lot of educating programmes.
To this end, this research work tends
to look into the students attitude towards foreign progrmames. The problem
