TRADITIONAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND IT IMPACT IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: A STUDY OF KALABARI COMMUNITY

ABSTRACT
The major thrust of this study was to ascertain the various forms of traditional communication systems in Kalabari, determine the effectiveness of these traditional communication systems in rural development, to determine whether the people of Kalabari prefer traditional modes of communication to modern modes of communication. This therefore necessitated the use of survey method, a sample size of 400 copies of the questionnaire were raised from which 296 copies were duly returned using stratified random sampling procedure. Among other things, findings shows that there is positive relationship between traditional communication and rural development of Kalabari community, traditional media have been empirically proven to be a positive instrument of achieving accelerated political and economic development through the mobilization of the people of Kalabari community. Hence, it is recommended that our cultural heritage should be preserve in Kalabari community, that there should be need for the establishment of programmes of research and action concerning this form of communication with the view to analyzing the philosophical and technical assumption underlying these forms of communication.
