51. Summary
of Findings
The aim of the study was to evaluate
the public relations strategies adopted by the University of Port Harcourt. The
research employed cluster sampling technique of the survey design with 400
questionnaires administered to respondents out of which 300 were duly completed
and returned for data analysis.
The summary of the findings shows that
there is a particular department allocated to public relations practitioners in
the University of Port Harcourt.
The findings further revealed that
there are special roles played by the public relations practitioner in
organizing symposium, seminars and meetings in the University of Port Harcourt.
The findings also shows that, public
relations strategies adopted in the University of Port Harcourt, its
implementation and practices are effective.
5.2 Conclusion
The need for an effective public
relations cannot be over emphasized in an institution. An institution like
University of Port Harcourt needs good and effective public relations if it
must compete favourably well with other institutions. Public relations
constantly require mediation between management and the institution is publics
in the issue of widely divergent views. It is also imperative to note that
public relations is aim at planned effort in influencing public opinion through
good character and responsible performance based upon mutually satisfactory
two-way communication; it becomes also imperative that public relations, irrespective
of the organization, performs communication function. Conclusively, this
function aids in eliciting the opinions, attitudes and reactions of the persons
affected by the actions of the organization or institution and the evaluation
of consequences.
5.3 Recommendations
Based
on the findings from this study, the following recommendations are made:
1.
The public relations unit of the
University of Port Harcourt should be more communicative. The unit should
utilize more of publicity, a public relations tool, to inform and enlighten the
entire institution, be it students, academic staff union and the general public
about its services.
2.
The institution should pay more
emphasis on developmental initiatives in the institution. This could be in the
areas of sponsored developmental projects, initiating professional awards,
awarding student’s scholarships.
3.
The institution should attach more
importance to public relations department since its strategies projects the
good image of the institution.
