RESEARCH METHODOLOGY ON ASSESSING THE INFLUENCE OF WRSTERN TV PROGRAMS OF THE DRESS SENSE OF NIGERIA UNIVERSITY STUDENT

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.0 INTRODUCTION
This study is designed to find out how students’ dress sense is affected as a result of exposure to western television programmes. This chapter highlights the research methods used for this research work.
3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN
The design of a research can be regarded as the framework which specifies the type of information to be gathered including the source of data and the procedure use in collecting them.
3.2 RESEARCH POPULATION
The population of a study can be animate or inanimate things which study is focused. It could be a class, a school, libraries, towns, a Local Government Areas, states, nations or persons the research is interested in getting information from the study.
The population of this study comprises of the University of Port Harcourt students selected randomly from different departments. One thousand, two hundred (1,200) students from the department of civil and environmental engineering, one thousand, one hundred and fifty two (1,152) from the Department of Educational Management and one thousand and forty-eight (1,0 48) students from the department of mathematics and statistics.
3.3 RESEARCH SAMPLE AND SAMPLING TECHNIQUE
Simple random sampling technique is a probability samples that is free from bias and its sampling error is easily detected.
The respondents were gotten from three (3) departments selected by the unreplacement method of already selected departments. The students constituted the population.
A sample size of 340 students which is 10% of the total population.
The formula used was: n x 10
100
Where:
n = total population
3400 x 10 = 340
1 100
Therefore the sample size is 340.
Number of students from the department of civil and environmental engineering =120.
Number of students from the department of educational management =115.
Number of students from the department of mathematics and statistics =105.
The selected departments are:
Department of civil and environmental engineering.
Department of educational management.
Department of mathematics and statistics.
3.4 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The research instrument used for this study was a self structured questionnaire called the influence of Western Television Programmes on Dress Sense Questionnaire (TWTPDSQ).
The questionnaire contains two parts: part one contained personal data of respondents while part two contained items structured to elicit answers to the research questions raised in the study.
3.5 METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION
The information for the research work was collected through the administration of questionnaires on respondents at the University of Port Harcourt. To ensure accurate data collection, the questionnaire was administered by the researcher. The entire questionnaire distributed was returned by the researcher.
3.6 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
The responses obtained from the investigation were analyzed using simple percentage. Data collected were examined and compared. The chi-square t-test was used to test and analyze some selected hypothesis. The chi-square statistics X2 =
Where O = Observed frequencies
E = expected frequencies
= Summation
