PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
4.0 Introduction
This study is focused on the attitude of
students towards foreign programmes on Independent television and testing the relevancies
of the stated research question in relation to the subject matter. This chapter
will hence emphasize on the analysis of data collected, its interpretation and
presentation of the findings in an attempt to obtain solution to some of the
research question.
4.1 Data presentation and analysis
The data are grouped by faculty, scored and
analyzed using percentage. The total number of 400 questionnaire was
distributed and total of 280 was collected immediately from various faculty of
the University of Port Harcourt.

Research question 1: what is the
extent of exposure of the student to foreign programmes on Independent
Television station in the university of Port Harcourt?
To answer the question, the research
question 3 and 4 will be analyzed in the table below.

From the table above, it is seen that
24 numbers of respondents (final year students of Uniport) always watch news
(Current affairs programmes, 68 (24%) respondents always watch fashion/dressing
related programmes, 62 (22%) watch music/dance, 40 (14%) watch drama while only
10 (4%) watch cartoon, 76 (27%) watch
movies.

Table 3 which represent the analysis
of question 1 in the questionnaire shows that 17.87% exposed to African, 13.57%
are exposed to Asian while 0% are exposed to Australian. 40.7 are exposed to
the National, 15.3 are exposed to Yoruba, 22.8% exposed to Igbo, 12.5 are
exposed to Hausa, 8.57 are exposed to minorities in the local programmes.
Research
question two: Is there any relationship between the attitudinal change of
students and foreign programmes on independent television?
To respond to this question, question
number 5, 6, 7 and 12 in the questionnaire will be analyzed below using tables.

have positive attitude to foreign programmes while 116 (41.4%) have negative
attitude to foreign programmes.

The above table declared that number
of respondents whose attitude are influenced and not influenced, therefore
71.4% declared that their attitude are influenced while 28.5 are not.

The above table declared the number of
respondents who think the foreign television programmes influence the attitude
of students 71.4% think that it influences them positively while 28.5% thinks
it influences them negatively.

The table shows that (16.4%) respondents agree that the area in
which the station influence them the more is greeting 8.6% say it is eating
22.9% say its dancing, 10% say it is singing 88 (31.4%) it is dressing while 30
(10.7%) it is talking.

The table above shows that (92.8%) 260
respondents believe that they often watch foreign programmes on Independent
Television while 20 (7.1%) don’t watch.
Question 2: Do
you watch foreign programmes on independent television?
4.2 Discussion
of findings
Research question 1
From the analysis in research question
1, table 2, 3 shows that final year student of uniport are exposed to foreign
programmes on Independent television station. A higher amount watch independent
television because of movies, while some go for fashion. 22.1% watch more of
movie and dance, while 14.2% watch drama/soap series, 8.5% watch news/current
affairs and the remaining 4% watch cartoons.
Research question 2
From the analysis in research question
2, table 4, 5, 6 and 7 shows that there is relationship between the change of
attitude of students and foreign programmes on independent television. Table 4
shows that higher percentage have positive attitude towards foreign programmes.
Table 5 shows that 71.4% are influenced by foreign programmes while 28.5% are
not. Table 6 show that 71.4% are negatively influenced while 28.5% are
positively influenced by foreign programmes on independent television.
Table 7 shows that 31.4% are
influenced in the area of dressing, while 22.9% are influenced in the area of
dancing. 16% are influenced in the area of greetings while 10% are influenced
in the area of eating.
Research question 3
From the analysis in research question
3, table, 8 shows that higher number of final year students of uniport think
that the trend is unhealthy and harmful to the existence of our cultural
heritage.
Research question 4
From the analysis in research question
4, tables 9 shows that (92.8%) people watch foreign programmes on independent
television while 7.1% don’t watch foreign programmes on independent television.
Generally, majority of uniport final
year students watch foreign programmes on Independent television while minority
watch local programmes.
